The 2024-2025 FAFSA Form is Open!
The U.S. Department of Education announced that it will be updating data used to calculate the Student Aid Index (SAI), formerly known as Expected Family Contribution (EFC), to account for inflation for the 2024-2025 award year, giving students access to an additional $1.8 billion in financial aid awards.
The update has caused a delay in delivering information from the FAFSA to colleges and universities nationwide. While no specific date has been provided by the Department of Education they do anticipate the information to be relayed in mid-March.
Once your information is received you will receive an email from MSU Denver’s Office of Financial Aid.
Soft Launch of the 2024-25 FAFSA Form
The 2024–25 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form is available periodically as part of the Department of Education’s soft launch. During the soft launch, the FAFSA form will be available for short periods of time while site performance and form functionality is monitored. Pauses will be initiated for site maintenance and to make technical updates as needed to provide you with a better experience. What is the FAFSA Simplification Act?
Congress recently passed laws to simplify and streamline the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to expand access to Federal Pell Grants. You can learn more about the FAFSA Simplification Act by visiting the Department of Education website.
What's Changing?
- Instead of opening in October, the 2024-2025 FAFSA went live December 31, 2023. This was only temporary for the 2024-2025 application. After the 2024-2025 aid year, the FAFSA will be available on October 1 as usual.
- The US Dept. of Education announced that it will be updating data used to calculate the Student Aid Index (SAI), formerly known as Expected Family Contribution (EFC), to account for inflation for the 2024/25 award year, giving students access to an additional $1.8 billion in financial aid awards.

Once your information is received you will receive an email from MSU Denver’s Office of Financial Aid.
- With the 2024-2025 FAFSA, Expected Family Contribution (EFC) will be replaced with Student Aid Index (SAI) ‒ this is a new need analysis formula that the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships will use when awarding need-based grants and scholarships.
- You’ll notice several new terms like contributor (anyone who is asked to provide information on the FAFSA, a parent or student spouse for example) and consent (each contributor will need to consent to their information being included on the FAFSA).
- The FAFSA will feature fewer questions, fewer requirements, and retrieve tax information using a direct data exchange from the IRS instead of the previous IRS Data Retrieval Tool.
- The adjustments to the new Student Aid Index (SAI) calculation will expand Federal Pell Grant eligibility to more students.
